Twenty-Two

The entire peninsula is a crime scene: the building sites, the walking paths, the roads, the cliffs. Except, as Griz acknowledges when I raise my eyebrows and look out at the expanse of rock and grass, they likely won’t find anything because so much time has passed. But they need to try.

“They didn’t make Roly come back from the beach? I was picturing him on the plane, sunburned and still clutching his sangria.”

She grins. “No, I guess they think we can handle it here.”

“Which you can. You think someone here knows what happened to Lukas Adamik?” I ask her.

She looks away, tracking the movement of a guy in plainclothes across the driveway. “We don’t think anything yet. All we know is we got a request for assistance. The detective here got word yesterday on the postmortem.”

“What about Zuzanna Brol?”

She shakes her head.

“Where do you think Lukas’s body was all that time?”

“No idea, but we need to secure whatever’s left of a crime scene. And don’t quote me on any of that, okay?” The look she gives me is actually stern.

Someone calls out, “Can we get another room for Detective Fiero?”

“I’ll see,” Tobin calls back.

“Thanks,” the guy in the black jacket yells back to them. He’s about my age, with a graying crew cut, quite obviously not from around here. “I can try somewhere else, but it would be handy if they’ve a room.”

Griz looks exhausted. “I’ll talk to you tomorrow, Maggie, okay? Roly said you were asking about this. Sounds like your instinct that something was off about this place was right.”
